ACU 2005 British Trials Championship Fifth Round
Graham Jarvis extended his lead at the top of the championship
standings today with a clear win ahead of team mate and close rival,
Sam Connor.
It was Graham Jarvis who took hold of the event from the word go.
He found himself leading the pack after the first lap having an
impressive ride of 11 marks lost.
Jarvis continued to build on his early lead with the bext lap scores
on both laps 2 and 3 losing just 5 marks on both laps. This left
Connor and Colley to battel is out for 2nd position, but it was
the Sherco mounted Sam Conner, 2005 Scottish Six Day Trial champion
who took the second spot.
Ian Austermuhle finished a surprise 4th position. After what was
an impressive set of results in 2004, 2005 has started slowly for
the Beta rider who finally got back to his old ways taking 4th place
from a disapointing Shaun Morris who was stood on the top podium
only two weeks ago in Addingham Moorside.
This results leave Jarvis with a 4 point lead in the championship
ahead of Sam Connor with Steve Colley sat in 3rd, four points off
Connor.

World Outdoor wins Event of the Year Award!
The Lightweight Club are proud to announce that the
FIM World Outdoor Trial 2004 held in Bangor has won the Event of
the Year at the Northern Ireland Tourism Awards 2004/05 (sponsored
by Belfast International Airport). The Award was given to the Outdoor
Trial "For the most innovative, popular and successful event
during the past year." Once again the Club have excelled
at what we do best, running tough and challenging trials. Thanks
again to everyone who made it possible and we hope to see the crowds
grow again when we return to Bangor. Full list of prize winners
can be viewed on the NITB
website.
The following appeared on the North Down Council Website
about the award. I'm sure not mentioning the Lightweight Club was
only an oversight.
Council Wins Event of the Year Award
28 April 2005
North Down Borough Council was awarded the Event of the Year trophy
at the Northern Ireland Tourist Board's annual awards for the FIM
World Trials held in April 2004.
This event attracted more than 15,000 people and showcased some
superb sporting action. Seven times World Outdoor Champion Dougie
Lampkin did not disappoint the spectators taking a convincing victory
during the second day of the trial.
Regardless of rain showers, spectator and participators alike commented
on the brilliant atmosphere maintained throughout and unique setting
provided by the North Down coastline. The mixture of steep rock
out crops and muddy bankings proved the ideal test for the Worlds
best trials riders.
Stephen Reid, Director of Leisure, Tourism and Community Services
with North Down Borough Council was delighted to receive the award
and comments, "A crucial aspect of Council's tourism strategy
is to attract world class events to the Borough, which will be of
interest to residents and visitors alike. The World FIM Trials were
one such event and we are delighted to have had the opportunity
of hosting them. This Award endorses the hard work Council's tourism
department is doing to organise a varied and active event programme
across the Borough."
The Award was presented by Bruce Robinson, Permananet Secretary
of DETI. He commented that tourism in Northern Ireland was on the
up, saying "Visitor figures have continued to grow with numbers
now over the two million mark for the first time ever and revenue
in excess of £300 million."
D.E.F.R.A. CLAIMS ITS FIRST NATIONAL MOTOR CYCLE
TRIALS VICTIM
The recently released controversial Department of Environment,Food
and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) regarding the Single Payment Scheme for
farmers and landowners has brought about the cancellation of the
Neath Motor Cycle Club's opening round of the Colin Appleyard A.C.U.
British Motorcycle Trials Championship on May 15. The ruling issued
by DEFRA states that farmers and landowners in receipt of the Single
Payment Scheme must not allow any form of motorsport activities
on land while receiving payments through the scheme. The rule covers
many aspects of outdoor recreations totally detached from motorsport,
and in three categories. This new legislation threatens seven thousand
motor cycle events on the British calendar in 2005. The regulations
issued by DEFRA have already accounted for a number of events in
the north being cancelled. Many other planned events are under threat.
Any event, regardless of two, three, or four wheels is now in doubt.
Major events such as the Scottish Six Days Trial, The Scott Trial,
and all the major off-road events in the British Isles, unless not
on the Single Payment Scheme, are now in doubt. At this stage the
Auto Cycle Union (governing body of most forms of motorcycle sport)
and The Land Access and Recreation Association (LARA) are collating
information through their respective counsel with plans to mount
a legal challenge to the DEFRA rulings. Other national organisations
are taking up the legality of the new Single Payment Scheme rules.
Letters have been sent to the Secretary of State demanding clarification
of the DEFRA statements. Those affected by DEFRA, the farmers and
landowners, and any person in receipt of the S.P.S. have been experiencing
difficulty interpreting the fifty page document sent out by DEFRA
in recent weeks because of the complexity of the wording.

Raga does it in style
Adam
Raga really turned on the style to produce an fantastic performance
which left the rest of the pack behind him. Fresh from his crowning
as this years World Indoor Trial Champion, he seemed relaxed but
wanting to stamp his authority that he is the new World Champion.
The sections proved difficult in Belfast with some of the riders
having to temporarily employ additional minders at certain stages
of the event. Former World Trial Champion Martin Lampkin made an
appearance, helping out son Dougie, at a difficult lift from a small
skip on the second lap of Section 2 .
The crowd seemed to much enjoy the event and were very much getting
behind their favourite riders. A highlight of the night seemed to
be the high jump event, where riders have to launch themselves up
a steep ramp, give the back brake a quick sqeeze to lower the front
wheel of the bike and land in one piece without dislodging the high
bars. However, the excitement was palpable when the tandem races
took place, the riders having to race each other down a ramp, across
an obstacle, turn and go back again. The winner being the first
to touch down at the top of the ramp again. The local favourite
Dougie Lampkin put on a fine performance and was clearly overjoyed
by winning two in a row to secure his place as 3rd in the World
Championship standings.
The riders themselves seemed to enjoy the event, which managed
to tax even the triumphant Raga at some sections. This was apparent
by how much attention each rider and minder paid when another rider
was going through a section, particularly in the seemingly more
difficult reverse direction of the second lap. But as all the riders
know, particularly after the previous two years' World Outdoor Trial
Championship events held in Bangor County Down, the Lightweight
Motor Cycle Club likes to set difficult trials.
All in all the event seemed to be a massive success with large
crowds and good coverage from the press and television. The future
looks certain that Northern Ireland and the Lightweight Motor Cycle
Club are set to host more events of this calibre in the future.
The Club would like to thank all its members and Committee members
for their time and expertise in bringing this together, Matt from
Events 22 for promoting the event, Louise and all the Events 22
staff, the Odyssey Arena and all their staff for making this an
excellent venue, Trialstar, Octagon, and everyone who devoted their
time and effort to stage the trial and make it the exciting spectacle
that it was. And of course the fans who came long, paid their money
and created an electric atmosphere that will surely mark Northern
Ireland as a place the riders and their teams want to come back
and compete in again.

Ireland Team wins Trial Des Nations 2004
Congratulations to the Ireland Team in winning the
2004 Trial Des Nations. The competition held on 26th September in
Cordoba in Spain, was as always a hard fought battle between 13
International Teams from as far away as Venezuela and Australia.
The Irish team always competes well in this International event,
and have narrowly missed winning outright on several occasions.
So congratulations must go to Gareth Andrews (Beta), Michael Burton
(Gas Gas), Robert Crawford (Beta) and Andrew Perry (Sherco). Well
done on a well deserved victory!

2 Day cancelled
July 2004
The Lightweight Motor Cycle Club are sorry to announce that this
years 2 Day has been cancelled due to lack of venue. We apologise
for any inconvenience this has caused.
Dougie
does it again!!
Sunday 4th April 2004
It was business as usual for seven times World Outdoor Champion
Dougie Lampkin (Repsol - Montesa - HRC) today, when he took a convincing
victory during the second day of the trial held in Bangor, Ireland.
Yesterdays winner Takahisa Fujinami (Repsol - Montesa - HRC)
could only manage fourth place today, and as a result instantly
surrendered the championship lead to Lampkin. Albert Cabestany (Beta)
showed his consistency and went one place higher than yesterday
to take second spot whilst Adam Raga (Gas Gas) arrived on the podium
for the first time during the weekend in third place.
Thankfully for the fifteen thousand fans that turned out the weather
remained dry for most of the day with just one light rain shower
earlier on. However despite the better conditions overhead and alterations
to two sections overnight the course remained equally difficult
and very slippery. But today the top riders established a higher
level with some fantastic riding keeping the scores very low despite
the scale and severity of the hazards.
Lampkin looked strong and recorded a clean at section two where
he had twice failed on Saturday. He and Fujinami once again locked
themselves in battle and remain almost on the same marks until the
Japanese rider unexpectedly failed in section twelve. Lampkin headed
the field five marks clear of Fujinami at the end of the first lap,
the Repsol Montesa - HRC duo closely followed at this stage
by Raga on eighteen marks and Cabestany on two marks more.
Three failures for Fujinami during his second lap saw him fall
down the leader board, in contrast Cabestany raised his game to
post the second best lap score of the day and in doing so moved
into the runners up position. Despite not being at his strongest
Raga did manage to maintain his rhythm to eventually snatch third
place by a single mark.
With a four point advantage Lampkin will arrive in Portugal in
two weeks as the new championship leader.

Day One of the World Round 2004
Saturday
3rd April
Day One for the first round of the 2004 World Outdoor Trial Championship
is over and a difficult day was faced by both riders, officials,
observers and spectators. The day saw blue skies, rain, hail, wind
and tidal waves (for everyone at Sections 2 & 3 when the HSS
passed know what we are talking about). But the conditions didn't
affect the riders and an excellent display of riding lead to a very
close first day, with Takahisha "Fujigas" Fujinami taking
the top step on the podium, closely followed by Dougie Lampkin only
2 points back, and Albert Cabestany only 3 points off Dougie. Everyone
is expecting another exciting day tomorrow, and hoping for a repeat
of last years victory where Dougie was second after the first day,
but came back to win outright, which set him up to take another
World Championship Title. The battle for the first day within the
Junior section was equally exciting, with the crowds really getting
behind and supporting the younger and less experienced riders. The
results were also tight with the Spaniard Jose-Maria Juan taking
the podium on 92 points but with a local favourite Mika Vesterinen
only 2 points behind, and Diego Garrido a further 7 points back.
Full results are available for both Championship
and Junior
Championships (pdf format, Adobe Acrobat required). The excitement
is by no means over, and we hope to see even bigger crowds tomorrow
for another great day of trials, as we wait to see if Dougie is
going to make it EIGHT World Championship Titles with a win at Bangor,
or will Takahisha Fujinami stop his 5 times runner up role and start
the Championship off with a conclusive win. The Club would like
to thank everyone for their help, and hope to see you all again
tomorrow and hopefully the weather will be a little kinder!! Yours
in sport, The Lightweight Motor Cycle Club.
World Championship 2004 Round 1 Bangor Preview 2004
Please read the press release
supplied by G2F for and on behalf of the FIM about the upcoming
event in Bangor on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of April.
First round of the 2004 World Motorcycle Trial Championships returns
to Bangor, 3rd & 4th April 2004
January 2004
Bangor is proud to welcome the return of the first round of the
World Motorcycle Trial Championships on the 3rd & 4th April
2004. Kicking off the first of 10 rounds across the world, this
competition sees the return of the current World Champion, Dougie
Lampkin MBE to defend his title for the 8th consecutive year.
The first round returns to Bangor following the tremendous success
of the 2003 event when over 20,000 visitors enjoyed a weekend of
spectacular motorcycle trials around the North Down Coastline.
"An economic evaluation following the event suggested that
it generated over £1million of income for the local economy."
revealed Christine Mahon, Tourism Manager. "This outstanding
event attracted the worlds top 40 riders and crew along with visitors
from all over the UK, Ireland, Europe and Japan."
Working in conjunction with the Lightweight Motorcycle Club, North
Down Borough Council has been invited by the organising committee,
Octagon Esedos, to host the first round of the 2004 Outdoor series.
Octagon Esedos commented very favourably on the quality of the
challenging world class course laid out around the coast 2003, and
were extremely impressed by the professionalism and expertise displayed
by both the Club and the Council. They had no hesitation in choosing
Bangor as this year's venue.
Billy Rodgers, President of the Motorcycle Union of Ireland, Ulster
Centre, has been nominated for the second year as Clerk of the Course.
"This is a challenging role as safety of both competitors
and spectators is paramount." said Billy, "It is also
vital to create yet another challenging course that maintains F.I.M
standards and ensures a quality competition."
New to the competition this year is Harold McQuaid from Carrowdore,
Newtownards. Harold unfortunately was too young to compete last
year but having now turned sixteen he is looking forward to competing
against some of the world's best. Other local riders hoping to compete
in the 2004 competition are Andy Perry and Gareth Andrews both from
Bangor. Gareth competed in the 2003 finishing in 19th Place. He
is hoping to improve on that in 2004.
Ends.

round of the FIM World Motorcycle Trials Championship to be held
in Bangor on 5th & 6th April 2003. This Round is the only one
to be held in the British Isles this year. The competition will

Dougie Lampkin MBE will the main focus of the event

The best 40 riders from all over the world will require
all their skill, precision and nerves of steel as they negotiate
the natural obstacles set out around Stricklands Glen and Bangor

Crawford, and Andy Perry will all have places on the short list
of 40 entrants to be announced in mid March. There will be fifteen
sections stretching from the Start/Finish area in the McKee Clock
Arena as far round as Carnalea Golf Club.
"It is hoped that this event will attract many
1000's of sporting enthusiasts from all over the World to Bangor
supporting our local businesses and placing North Down on the map
as a world class sporting venue. Our accommodation providers have
already reported a great deal of interest." Revealed Mayor
of North Down, Cllr Alan Graham. "Trials is a breathtaking
event for spectators to watch and this round has teh advantage of
having all the sections within walking distance."
It is just over a year ago when it was announced that
this round had been awarded to Bangor thanks to the perserverence
of Billy Rodgers, Lightweight Motorcycle Club supported by North
Down Borough Council. Billy in his role of President of the Motorcycle
Union of Ireland (MCUI), Ulster Centre has also been nominated
as Clerk of the Course.
"This will be a challenging role" said Billy,
"Safety of both competitors and spectators is paramount. It
is also about maintaining F.I.M. standards to ensure a quality competition."
"As the Ulster Centre of the MCUI reaches its
centenary year, hosting a World Class event such as this will be
fitting celebration of all the work the Union have done over the
last 100 years."

this was a fact finding mission in view of the club running the
event next year. It also gave our Bangor friends the opportunity
to see at first hand what is involved in staging an event of this
magnitude. There was a meeting with the Spanish promoters Octagon
Esedos to discuss plans for the 2003 event. We also were given very
helpful information from the Pevril Motor Cycle Club and the members
of the Events committee of the Isle of Man Tourist Board. The weather
was very poor but the organisation was excellent, and I hope we
can do as good a job when April 2003 comes around.
