Newcastle
Gears Up for World Championship Trials
The SPEA FIM Trial World Championship is set
to bring more than 15,000 visitors to Down District
next year when the Adelaide GP of Ireland is
staged for the first time in Donard Forest,
Newcastle, it was announced
today, 22ND December 2008.
The first and second round of the 2009 SPEA
FIM (Federation Internationale Motocycliste)
World Championship to be held on 4th & 5th
April will attract competitors from all over
the world supported by an enthusiastic entourage
of international fans. It will also create three
days of dramatic sporting spectacle for local
people.
The Lightweight Motor Cycle Club, the organisers
of the Adelaide GP of Ireland, have already
brought 3 different Trial World Championships
to Northern Ireland, have been working tirelessly
to bring the event back to our shores and are
extremely excited about the new venue which
will offer new challenges to the Competitors
and an outstanding sporting spectacle for the
fans. The Club is also looking forward to working
with Down District
Council and making this a truly exceptional
weekend of sport. We would also like to thank
the N.I. Forest Service for accommodating stages
of the event within Donard Forest.
The battle to secure the event for the region
is almost as hotly contested as the Trials and
Councillor Colin McGrath, Chairman of Down District
Council, was obviously delighted to see Newcastle
successful in its bid. He said, "This is
a fabulous international sporting occasion which
injects real economic benefits into the region
which is fortunate enough to host it. Competitors,
their support teams and travelling fans will,
on average, stay three or four nights in the
Borough and there will also be a major influx
of spectators from across Ireland on short stay
breaks and day trips. Add to that the television
and media opportunities associated with bringing
an international sporting spotlight onto the
region and it's small wonder that so many areas
are anxious to host the Adelaide GP of Ireland.
We're thrilled to have been able to secure the
event for Down District and I would like to
congratulate the team who have been working
so hard behind the scenes on this and other
soon to be announced attractions, which will
combine
to make our region the events capital of Northern
Ireland in 2009 and beyond!"
"While arrangements for the Trials will
be kept firmly under wraps until a formal launch
in February, it is safe to say that Donard Forest
is an absolutely superb venue with an excellent
course. And everyone will be making tracks for
Newcastle over the weekend of 4th & 5th
of April!"
Note to News Editors
Diary date: The News Conference to announce
details of the Adelaide GP of Ireland will be
held on Tuesday 17th February at the Slieve
Donard Hotel, Newcastle. Formal press and media
invitations will be circulated in due course.

Trial goes to Graham Jarvis!

(L-R)Shaun Morris,President Drew Armstong,
Graham Jarvis, and Michael Brown at British
Trials Champonship 10th June 2007 |
An expectant group of riders arrived at Dunmore
Mountain, Spa Ballynahinch on the weekend to
tackle what has become known as a very challenging
Round of the British Outdoor Trials Championship.
Many of the riders are familiar with this part
of the Northern Irish countryside having competed
here at previous British Rounds. The familiar
favourites were present as always, current Sammy
Miller holder Graham, the tenacious Steve Colley,
the rising star Alex Wigg, and Championship
contenders Shaun Morris and Michael Brown were
all present. Steve Colley having to tackle the
course without previous examination as due to
travel arrangements was only able to arrive
on Sunday morning.
It became apparent very early on that this
was going to be a tough day of trials for riders
in all classes, as retirement happened before
the first lap was completed. Most notable among
these were Championship Challenger Steve Colley.
Apparently Steve suffered a mishap on Section
4 when trying to dismount his bike, with his
foot becoming caught between the mudguard and
the tyre, causing him to fall and badly damage
his ankle. Paramedics were quickly on the scene
as always and were able to remove Steve's boot
and bandage the ankle. However, Steve was unable
to put his boot back on due to the excruciating
pain and elected to go back to his van to try
and put it on. Unfortunately this never happened
and one of the most entertaining and hard working
riders was forced to retire from the field.
I am sure we will see Steve back next year,
and hope his injury will be fully healed before
the next round.

Alexz Wigg after taking a tumble early on
at British Trials Championship 2007 at Wightmans
Dunmore Mountain Ballynahinch |
Other riders also suffered from the tough conditions
on what was a very dry and dusty course with
grip at a premium. These included Alexz Wigg
who had a tumble at an early section and hit
his face. This developed into a nasty looking
black eye. This did not hold Alexz back for
long and showed his determinated by not even
complaining about it. Alexz fought on to finish
a very respectable Fourth Place just narrowly
missing a podium position.
Graham Jarvis quickly stamped his authority
on the day by taking the lead after the first
lap, only picking up 11 marks when many Championship
riders were struggling to break 30. His famous
consistency continued with a terrific Second
Round only dropping 5 marks.
His only real competition all day were Shaun
Morris and Michael Brown who both fought hard
over difficult conditions. Going into the final
lap it looked like Graham had it all wrapped,
but Shaun Morris pulled off an amazing final
round by only picking up 3 marks. This brought
him within 2 marks overall but Jarvis' consistency
took the day. The final Championship result
was first Graham Jarvis 32 marks, Shaun Morris
34 marks and Michael Brown 57 marks.
The Expert Section was also a very hard fought
affair with Joe Baker finishing in first with
a great score of 44 marks, but the second and
third place was where it got interesting, with
both Dan Thorpe and Ross Danby, on a 125 Gas
Gass, finishing on 68 marks. Dan eventually
finishing ahead of Ross after count back, but
once again proves how close trials can be, even
after 36 very difficult sections.
The Youth Section was less complicated with
only Jonathan Richardson competing, but finishing
with a very respectable 99 marks dropped.
Tough conditions made the course difficult
for all riders, with a few retirements testament
to this. However as Graham Jarvis commented,
he thoroughly enjoyed the trial and as always
enjoyed the tough challenge laid out by the
Lightweight Course Makers.
Once again many thanks to all those who gave
their time in order to make this trial happen,
particularly all the observers, and all those
who helped organise the event. Same time next
year?

World Outdoor
set for Bangor again!!
The Lightweight Motor Cycle Club are pleased
to annouce that in association with North Down
District Council, we have been awarded another
Round of the World Outdoor Trials Championship.
The Round which is scheduled to be held on
6th of April 2008 is the fruitition of much
work on behalf of the Lightweight Motor Cycle
Club Committee and members as well as North
Down District council. As many are aware, difficulties
existed with finding an appropriate venue for
the trial ,within the area and also with other
countries attempting to get included in the
Outdoor Trials Championship. The hard work has
paid off and we are all looking forward to the
excellent day of Trials scheduled for next year.
More information will be posted as we get it,
but with the official announcement only coming
on Monday 9th of April, there is a lot more
to come. With the first round of the 2007 Outdoor
Trials Championship just completed, we will
be watching with interest to see what rising
stars appear this year and what veteran stars
will continue to shine.

Graham Jarvis
wins Sammy Miller Trial...again!

(L-R)Billy Rodgers, Sam Haslam, Graham Jarvis,
Drew Armstrong at British Trials Champonship
13th Aug 2006 |
It was a smaller field than normal which competed
in the Irish Round of the British Outdoor Trials
Championship on Sunday 13th August, but several
familiar faces had made the journey to the exposed
course at Dunmore Mountain, Wightmans in Ballynahinch.
Among those Championship riders were the top
4 in the country, namely Graham Jarvis, Steve
Colley, Shaun Morris and James Dabill, all of
whom competed at the same venue last year.
Due to other commitments Steve Colley was unable
to participate in practice on Saturday so his
first site of the course was went he left the
Start line early Sunday morning. This however,
didn't seem to impede him too much when he clocked
an excellent first lap score of 4 points putting
himself and current Sammy Miller holder and
British Championship Leader, Graham Jarvis on
equal footing, with Shaun Morris only 3 marks
behind them.
The word from the course was that the sections
were very tough and technical but excellently
designed both for difficulty and timing, with
some riders commenting it was the most challenging
event of the calendar so far. More than one
rider mentioned that a little rain could make
the course incredibly difficult. Luckily the
clouds stayed away and the sun and wind made
the day perfect for trials riding.
As the day wore on, it was clear the Championship
would come down to the last couple of sections,
and when the final scores were checked, Gas
Gas rider Shaun Morris had pulled off fantastic
second and third laps only dropping 4 points
to give him a final score of 11 which was good
enough for second place, edging out Mr Showman
Steve Colley to third place on 15 points. Once
again proving himself to be incredibly consistant
Graham Jarvis took the top step on the podium
with a tremendous score of 9 points, dropping
only 1 point on the final lap, on a course which
had settled in and was not as difficult as had
been on the first laps. With this win Graham
Jarvis once again retained the Sammy Miller
Trial and extended his lead from Steve Colley
at the top of the British Championship Leaderboard.
The Expert Class was also a very hard fought
affair with only a few points separating the
top three riders, with Sam Haslam coming out
on top on 26pts ahead of Chris Pearson on 30pts
and Joe Baker in third, only a point behind
Chris with 31pts.
The ever interesting Youth Class was a different
matter, with the very strong Alexz Wigg taking
first place with a superb ride, dropping only
16 marks which would have had him at the top
of the Expert Class. Second went to Ross Danby
on 35pts and third was the Lightweight Clubs'
own Robert Andrews, who appearing in his first
British Round pulled out a fantastic performance
to finish third with 55 marks dropped. This
was a particularly difficult course and showed
that Robert is more than capable of producing
a top class ride among the top performers in
his class. And we are confident that this only
the first of many British Round podium finishes
for Robert and we will shortly see him take
the top step and bring the Lightweight Clubs
name to other parts of Britain and beyond.

are pleased to invite all fans of Motor Cycle
Trials (Observed Trials) to the upcoming Outdoor
British Trial Championship Round being held

previous success of two World Outdoor Trials
Championship Events as well as the World Indoor
Trials Championship Rounds in 2005 and 2006.
And the British Trials Championship is no different.
The Lightweight MCC have been proud to host

a hard fought season saw a win from Graham Jarvis
take the Championship further from the grasp
of Steve Colley.
We expect another full field of competitors

to the previous years venue, Dunmore Mountain
has an enormous amount of potential which the
course planners are sure will make the riders

traveling from the direction of Belfast and
from Castlewellan

Excellent Result
in the Hurst Cup 2006
The Lighweight Motor Cycle Club had an exceptional
day at the Hurst Cup Trial 2006 by winning the
Support Class from a field of 28 with 6 teams.
The team consisted of Colin Stewart winner of
Grade D, Davy Gault 3rd. in Grade D and Andrew
Gault, winner of Youth B. A brilliant performance
all round particularly from Colin Stewart winning
the Grade D overall. A special mention must
also go to Andrew Gault who won the Lucas Cup
for the best individual rider.
The entire event had a total entry of 53 taking
part in the Hurst Cup. 25 in the main event
with 8 teams. Congratulations to the Knock MCC
who were the overall winners.
Raga does it
again!!! World Indoor Motorcycle Trials Championship

Adam Raga wins again in the Odyssey Arena
Belfast. Visit the
Full Gallery for more images. |
For the second year in a row the Spanish rider
Adam Raga has taken the top step of the podium
in the Odyssey Arena Belfast on the second British
date in the World Indoor Championship. The capacity
crowds were treated with a great night of Motorcycle
Trials action, with spralling sections, big
air and hard falls to keep them on the edge
of their seats.
The first round was hard fought with all riders
paying very close attention to the early riders
to find the best line and the most grip through
the sections. A decision had been made early
on to, unlike last year when the Belfast Event
was composed of sections entirely supplied by
Octagon, to design and use specifically designed
sections. The Lightweight's own David Rodgers,
representing Trialstar and Andy Perry also of
Trialstar, spent some considerable time designing
and then building the bespoke sections. The
overall effect was a much more challenging,
technical and spectator friendly event that
even challenged the current Indoor World Champion
Adam Raga, who fived one of the sections. The
riders also had to confront a fantastic Spark
Plug section from NGK, another from Pump X,
2 & 4 Wheel Sport, Belfast City Council,
Plank Company and Cool FM.
Raga, as cool as always, qualified ahead of
British Hero Dougie Lampkin and fellow Spanish
rider Jeroni Fajardo to meet head to head in
the final round. With the final very tricky
tandem race section during the qualifying stage
the crowd were very much behind Dougie Lampkin
who need to win in order to make it to the final.
The Final was a hard fought affair with Fajardo
doing trail finder over the more difficult reverse
direction of the section, it quickly became
a two horse race between Adam Raga and Dougie
Lampkin. Raga again made the tricky parts of
the sections seem very simple, with his low
rev approach that at times seemed to glide him
over the technical areas others had stumbled
at. Dougie Lampkin took a hard fall half way
through which could only have aggrevated his
already painful broken rib, but after a quick
check from the ever watchful medical staff,
he was back on his bike and ready to move to
the next section.
Eventually Adam Raga extended his lead and
put his Gas Gas comfortably infront of the Montesa
of Dougile Lampkin. Raga and his famous determination
held firm and with no major mistakes he once
again took his full compliment of Championship
Points and furthered his lead on the Championship
overall. The crowd were still very much behind
Dougie, and were hugely pleased to see the British
Rider once again on the podium, as was Dougie
himself.
The event was an overall massive success with
more interest than ever in Motorcycle Trials
within Northern Ireland, the future is bright
and with the World Indoor Trials Championship
set to return to Northern Ireland again, the
Lightweight Club would like to thank all those
that helped make it possible. Events 22, Sports
Council for Northern Ireland, 2&4 Wheel,
Trialstar, Odyssey Arena Belfast, Belfast City
Council and everyone else, many thanks and see
you all next year.

Robert Andrews
- Youth European Championship Round Up
Well my European championship has just finished
and managed a Fifth Place overall in the Championship.
The 3rd and Final round was held in Italy as
was he rial des Nations the week before. We
were in Italy early as my own minder Harry (Crawford)
was doing minder for the Irish team. I was not
competing, as you have to be 17 years old and
unfortunately I am only 16. The Gas Gas factory
brought my new 2006 125cc Gas Gas to the Trial
des Nations so I was out every day getting it
run in and ready for next weeks final European
round. The bike felt good and I was riding steady
so I decided to help the team out by going round
with the water and a few spanners during the
competition, an experience in which I enjoyed
for once, although I would have loved to ride,
maybe next year?
The lads managed a credible 9th place in the
professional Group A this year after winning
Group B last year. As soon as the TDN was over
it was back on the road again, but only a short
50km drive down the Italian mountains to the
venue for the last Euro round. Just in time
for a few days practice before the main competition.
The trial was a bit on the easy side and hen
I made a silly mistake on the second section
I thought that I had blown my chances but luckily
not as I ended up 3rd and on the podium. I was
a little disappointed as I was only 1 point
off second but third was ok I suppose. i therefore
secured my fifth place in the championship and
met my Target which I, and the Sports Council
of Northern Irelad, set at the start of the
year to finish in the top 6 in Europe.
Back home now and I've just started studying
for my A levels at Bangor Academy so I'm flat
out at school and on the bike. I spend most
of the time practising with Rob Crawford and
my Uncle Harry acting as minder for us both.
Rob is riding really well at the moment and
it is great training with him. I feel they have
both pushed me onwards and upwards and hopefully
it could be a winning formula, who knows, we
will have to wait and see!
I'll have to get back to course work because
I'm writing this during my business studies
class, so see you all at the next Irish Championship.
Cheers Robert

Lightweight
Committee Member New MCUI President
At the Inter Centre of the Motor Cycle of Ireland,
held in Bewley's Hotel, Dublin, last weekend
21st. Jan. W J Rodgers (known to us all as Billy)
was elected to the top position in Ireland,
that of President of the M.C.U.I.. Billy becomes
the third member of the Lightweight Club to
be so highly honoured, the previous ones being,
the late R J Hewitt (better known as Bobby)
in 1982 and A J Armstrong (normally referred
to as Drew), held the post in 1992. Billy is
also President of the Ulster Centre, so is in
for a busy time.
A J Armstrong received a meritorious award
and became a Vice President of Honour, at the
same meeting.
Congratulations to Billy in this most prestigious
honour and we are sure he will do a fantastic
job, and the whole of the Lighweight Club would
like to offer their complete support to him.
And congratulations to Drew for very well deserved
award and in his new position. Again the Lightweight
Club would like to extend their congratulations
and support to Drew.
World Indoor
Trials Championship 2006
With the World Indoor Trials Championship
set to arrive and compete in the Odyssey Arena
in Belfast in just a few weeks, the competition
is starting to hot up. Albert Cabestany has
edged closer to Adam Raga and the lead after
taking his factory Sherco to a convincing win
during the 3rd Round in Granada, Spain on Saturday
(Jan 21). A 6000 strong crowd watched on as
Spanish riders Albert Cabestany, Adam Raga and
Toni Bou took the podium in respective order.
The 3rd time for an all Spanish podium. Adam
Raga maintains his lead on the series with 26
points, Toni Bou 21 is second and Albert Cabestany
on 21 points also.
The main topic of conversation, however, was
Dougie Lampkin who suffered a horrendous crash
the previous week in Marseille. Obviously in
pain, and with tremendous effort he managed
to complete his qualification lap but failed
to make it to the final. A Barcelona hospital
scan later in the week showed up a broken rib
which explained his continued pain and shortness
of breath. The floating rib needs time to heal
and with no other way to accelerate the healing
process other than rest, Dougie will clearly
need to take his time and hope that he is sufficiently
healed to compete in the Fourth Round of the
Indoor Championship in Milan, Italy on 29th
January.
Dougie said to reporters "This is not
ideal obviously but it could be worse. I just
want to be able to finish the indoor series
with some better results than we have managed
so far and then be 100% fit for th World Outdoor
Series." Lets hope he is back to top form
in time for the Odyssey.

2005, Events 22 have extended their agreement
with series owners Octagon to once again stage
one of the World rounds on February 10th 2006
at the spectacular Odyssey Arena, Belfast.
'I couldn't have been happier with the event

our first attempt at Indoor Trials and coming
very close to selling the event out proved to
me that the event has wide appeal' explained
event organiser Matt Bates.
Local organisers, The Lightweight Motorcycle
Club will also play a major role in running
the event. Drew Armstrong (President) added.

ACU 2005 British
Trials Championship Fifth Round
Graham Jarvis extended his lead at
the top of the championship standings today
with a clear win ahead of team mate and close
rival, Sam Connor.
It was Graham Jarvis who took hold of the event
from the word go. He found himself leading the
pack after the first lap having an impressive
ride of 11 marks lost.
Jarvis continued to build on his early lead
with the bext lap scores on both laps 2 and
3 losing just 5 marks on both laps. This left
Connor and Colley to battel is out for 2nd position,
but it was the Sherco mounted Sam Conner, 2005
Scottish Six Day Trial champion who took the
second spot.
Ian Austermuhle finished a surprise 4th position.
After what was an impressive set of results
in 2004, 2005 has started slowly for the Beta
